JavaScript - Set focus of an input element on page load
In this tutorial, we are going to learn about how to set the focus of an input element on page load using JavaScript.
Consider, that we have the following input
element in our HTML:
<input id="name" placeholder="Name"/>
To set the focus of an input element on page load, we can call the focus()
method on the input element when a load
event is fired on the window.
Here is an example:
const input = document.getElementById("name");
// fires when a page is loaded fully
window.addEventListener("load", (e)=>{
input.focus(); // adding the focus
})
In the example above, first we have accessed the HTML input
element inside the JavaScript using the document.getElement()
method.
Next, we have added load event listener to the window
object, inside that we are calling the input.focus()
method. So, it sets the focus to a selected input element when a page is loaded fully.
We have used the HTMLElement.focus() method to set the focus on a selected element.
input.focus();
The focus()
method sets the keyboard focus on an element it was called on.
Full working example
<input id="name" placeholder="Name"/>
JavaScript:
const input = document.getElementById("name");
// fires when a page is loaded fully
window.addEventListener("load", (e)=>{
input.focus(); // adding the focus
})
If you want to remove the focus from an input element, use the blur()
method.
input.blur();
