Getting the month name from a date in JavaScript
In this tutorial, we are going to learn about how to get the month name from a date using JavaScript.
Getting the month name
To get the month name in JavaScript, we can use the built-in toLocaleString()
method which is available in new Date()
constructor.
Here is an example, that gets the current month name October
from a date:
const d = new Date();
const monthName = d.toLocaleString("default", {month: "long"});
console.log(monthName); // "October"
The first argument in the toLocaleString()
method is locale
, it means you can pass your own country language, for example hi-IN
will return the month name in Hindi language.
const d = new Date();
const monthName = d.toLocaleString("hi-IN", {month: "long"});
console.log(monthName); // "अक्तूबर"
The
default
locale uses your system local language.
The second argument is { month: long }
it means we will get a full month name, other available options are short
for a short name (Oct), narrow
for the first letter in a month name (O).
To learn more about available options, you can checkout JavaScript Internationalization API Intl.DateTimeFormat() constructor.
