How to get a previous year in Java

In this tutorial, we are going to learn about how to get the previous year as an integer in Java.

Getting the previous year

To get the previous year in Java, first we need to access the current year using the Year.now().getValue() method and subtract it with -1.

Here is an example:

import java.time.Year;

public class Main
{
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        int currentYear = Year.now().getValue();
        int previousYear = currentYear-1;
        System.out.println(previousYear);
    }
}

Output:

2020

Note: The getValue() method returns the current year in four-digit(2021) format according to the user’s local time.
