How to get length of a string in Python

In this tutorial, we will learn how to get the length of a string in Python.

The length of a string means the total number of characters present in it.

Using len() function

To get the length of a string, we can use the built-in len() function in Python.

The len() function takes the string as an argument and returns the number of characters in it.

Here is an example, that gets the length of a name string:

name = "owlr"
length = len(name)

print(length)

Output:

4

We can also calculate the length of a string without using the len() function by taking the help of for loop.

name = "owlr"
counter = 0
for element in name:
    counter+=1 #each iteration increment the counter

print (counter) # 4
