Getting the length of a list in Python
In this tutorial, we are going to learn about how to get the length of list in Python.
The length of a list means the total number of elements present in it.
Using the len() function
To get the length of a list, we can use the built-in len()
function in Python.
The len()
function takes the list as an argument and returns the number of elements in it.
Here is an example, that gets the length of a fruits list:
fruits = ["apple", "banana", "grapes"]
length = len(fruits)
print(length)
Output:
3
If you don’t like to use the len()
function, we can also calculate it manually by using the for loop.
fruits = ["apple", "banana", "grapes"]
counter = 0
for element in fruits:
counter+=1 #each iteration increment the counter
print (counter) # 3
