How to check if a string is a number in Python
In this tutorial, we are going to learn about how to check if a given string is a number in Python.
Consider, we have the following string:
age = "16"
Now, we need to check if the above string contains a number or not.
Using isdigit() method
To check if a string is a number or not, we can use the built-in isdigit()
method in Python.
The isdigit()
method returns true if a given string is a number; otherwise, it returns false.
Here is an example:
age = "16"
result = age.isdigit()
print(result)
Output:
True
Using isnumeric() method
Similarly, we can also use the isnumeric()
method in python, to check if a string is a number.
The isnumeric()
method returns true if all characters in a string is numeric (0-9) otherwise it returns false.
Here is an example:
age = "16"
result = age.isnumeric()
print(result)
Output:
True
Note: For negative numbers, the above methods won’t work.
