How to change a location for local installation of npm package

In this tutorial, we are going to learn about how to change a default location for the local installation of an npm package.

When we run a npm install <package-name> command, npm starts installing the package and stored it inside the node_modules folder in your project root directory.

Now, we are going to see how to install an npm package in a different location, for example users/node_modules folder.

Changing the location for local installation

We can change a location for the local installation of an npm package by using the --prefix flag followed by the folder path which is a custom location you need to specify for installing the npm package.

Here is an example:

npm install react --prefix users

This above command installs the react package locally in a users/node_modules folder.
