How to solve Module not found: 'redux' error

The  Module not found: ‘redux’ error occurs one of the following reasons:

  1. Using the redux module without installing it.

  2. Installed the module in a global context and trying to access in project local context.

  3. The redux module is not installed in the correct project directory.

To solve the error “Module not found: ‘redux’”, open the project root folder in your terminal and run the following command to install the redux module and restart the development server.

npm install redux react-redux

Now, you can import and use the redux module in your react project like this:

import { createStore } from 'redux'

function counterReducer(state = { value: 0 }, action) {
  switch (action.type) {
    case 'incrementBy1':
      return { value: state.value + 1 }
    case 'decrementBy1':
      return { value: state.value - 1 }
    default:
      return state
  }
}

For Yarn:

yarn add redux react-redux

For TypeScript type definitions, you can use the below command:

npm install --save @types/react-redux

If you want to install a particular version of ‘redux’ module, you can use the following command.

npm install redux@4.2.0 react-redux@8.0.4

If you’re still facing the error, then follow the below steps to resolve it.

  1. Remove the node_modules folder and package-lock.json file, inside your project directory by using the below command.
rm-rf node_modules package-lock.json

or you can remove it manually by right-clicking on it and select the delete option.

  1. Clear the npm cache.
npm clean cache --force
  1. Re-install the node modules again by running the npm install command.

Verify now if you’ve installed it correctly or not by opening the package.json file and check for redux module in the dependencies object.

 "dependencies": {
     //...
    "redux": "^4.2.0",
    "react-redux": "^8.0.4"

    //.. other packages
 }

Conclusion

The can’t find module redux error occurs, if you’re trying to access a redux module that is not currently installed in your project. To solve the error install the redux module in your project directory by running the npm install redux react-redux command then restart your development server.
