Remove the focus from a button on click in JavaScript
In this tutorial, we are going to learn about how to remove the focus from a button on click using JavaScript.
Consider, that we have the following button
element in our HTML:
<button id="btn">Search</button>
To remove the focus from a button on click, call the blur()
method inside the button click
event handler method.
Here is an example:
const btn = document.getElementById("btn");
btn.addEventListener("click", ()=>{
btn.blur(); // removes the focus
})
In the example above, first we accessed the button element inside the JavaScript using the
document.getElementById()
, then we added a click event listener to the button using the addEventListener()
method.
So, whenever a user clicks on the button it runs the btn.blur()
method and removes the focus from it.
If you want to remove the focus from a currently active element without selecting it, call the blur()
on a document.activeElement
property.
Here is an example:
document.activeElement?.blur();
The document.activeElement property returns the element from a dom that currently has focus.
Full working example:
<button id="btn">Search</button>
JavaScript:
const btn = document.getElementById("btn");
btn.addEventListener("click", ()=>{
btn.blur(); // removes the focus
})
