Get the parent element from a child in JavaScript
In this tutorial, we are going to learn how to get a parent element from a child element using JavaScript.
Consider, we have the elements like this in our code:
<div class="container">
<h1 class="title">This is child</h1>
</div>
Now, we need to get the parent element div
by using the child element h1
.
Using document.querySelector() method
To get the parent element from a child, first we need to access the child element using the document.querySelector()
method by passing a classname
to it.
const child = document.querySelector(".title");
Now, we can access the parent element by calling a parentNode
property on it.
const parent = child.parentNode;
console.log(parent);
Output:
<div class="container">
</div>
Here is a full example:
<div class="container">
<h1 class="title">This is child</h1>
</div>
const child = document.querySelector(".title");
const parent = child.parentNode;
console.log(parent);
