How to add an item to an array in JavaScript
In this tutorial, we are going to learn about different ways to append an item into an array in JavaScript with the help of examples.
Appending single item at the end
To append a single item at the end of an array, we need to use the push()
method in JavaScript.
const arr = [1,2,3];
arr.push(4); // it adds 4 at end
console.log(arr); // [1,2,3,4]
Appending single item at the beginning
To append a single item at the beginning of an array, we need to use the shift()
method in JavaScript.
const arr = [1,2,3];
arr.push(0); // it adds 0 at beginning
console.log(arr); // [0,1,2,3]
Appending multiple items to an array
To append multiple items to an array we need to call the push()
method or unshift()
method with multiple arguments.
Example:
const arr = [2,3];
arr.push(4,5); // it adds multiple items at end
arr.unshift(0,1); // it adds multiple items at beginning
console.log(arr); // [0,1,2,3,4,5]
Note: The
push()
andunshift
method modifies the original array instead of creating the new array.
